Immigration Policy Changes that you have to know.

As of November 9, 2024, Canada has implemented significant changes to its immigration policies:

Reduction in Immigration Targets:

The federal government has announced a decrease in the number of new permanent residents:

• 2025: Target reduced from 500,000 to 395,000.

• 2026: Further reduction to 380,000.

• 2027: Target set at 365,000.

This decision aims to address concerns over housing affordability and public services.

Adjustments to Temporary Resident Programs:

Canada plans to lower the proportion of temporary residents from 6.5% to 5% of the total population by the end of 2026. Measures include:

• Implementing caps on international student permits.

• Tightening eligibility criteria for temporary foreign workers.

• Enhancing protections against exploitation for temporary foreign workers and international students.

Changes to Visitor Visa Policies:

The government has ended the automatic issuance of 10-year multiple-entry tourist visas. Immigration officers now have discretion to determine visa validity based on individual assessments, potentially leading to shorter-term visas and higher application costs.

These policy shifts reflect Canada’s efforts to balance economic needs with housing and social service capacities.

Keep update on our next post as we will talk about how these changes will affect your status in Canada and how to properly and strategically plan your stay in Canada.
